Job Description Summary
The R&D Senior Engineer reports directly to the Senior R&D Manager and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied material sciences within the IDS R&D organization. The R&D Senior Engineer will drive activities supporting the development, verification, and continued performance of IDS specimen management solutions for clinical diagnostic markets. Specific areas of focus may include: participating in cross-functional team discussions and providing functional inputs; preparing samples/prototypes for internal or external analysis; developing and executing test protocols and documenting results with minor guidance; conducting root cause analysis for product development and sustaining engineering activities; maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities.

PRIMARY DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:
Represents the R&D function as an Extended Team member in support of large technology and product development programs and may also support projects with less complexity as a Core Team member.
Design and execute experiments that further the development, verification, and evidence generation efforts across all assigned programs and projects.
Document and build technical knowledge within assigned business areas; explore and recommend solution concepts and principles when applicable.
Drive key aspects of product development work streams including but not limited to Requirements Management, Design Verification, and Design Transfer to Manufacturing for applicable assignments.
Ensure program success by working cross functionally with R&D-Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
Participate in intellectual property growth; submit patent applications and Invention Disclosure Records.
Works under general direction and independently determines or develops approach to solutions.
Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices, all relevant lab operational procedures, and actively participate in maintaining the setting and functionality of the IDS Analytical laboratories and equipment.
Mentor and train junior team members and foster a collaborative work environment.
Travel as required to conferences, manufacturing sites, customer visits, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a B.S. in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field is required. M.S. or Ph.D. strongly preferred.
B.S. 5+ years’ experience.
M.S. 3+ years’ experience.
Ph.D.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Sound knowledge of material science and engineering principles
- Working experience in medical device industry
- Familiar with design control process and medical device regulations
- Knowledge of method validation and six sigma methodology is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good technical judgement and ability to convince others
- Ability to work in a cross-functional environment
- Self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands on work
Expected to become proficient in specific core competency areas (dependent on specific role/requirements within the R&D IDS organization; for example biological sciences would include coagulation, clinical chemistry, hematology, etc., material sciences would include FTIR, DSC, HPLC, etc.).
Experience with handling clinical specimens (particularly human blood) is desired; blood borne pathogen safety training is necessary and will be provided.
