Job Description:
Provide Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) support to laboratory research and development (R&D) and office operations.
Develops and implements procedures, processes and programs compliant with company EHS standards, OSHA and other local, state, and federal regulations with focus on key continuous improvement initiatives.
- Advise organization of workplace EHS requirements, expectations, and best practices. Communicate and coordinate guidelines for organization’s employee and contractor safety awareness. Recommends improvements and standardization to practices and procedures to ensure safe and healthy work conditions for site personnel and environmental compliance to maintain business right to operate.
- Resource job safety analysis of laboratory work areas and processes to identify safety, health and environmental issues, such as chemical, biological, physical and radioactive hazards, as well as musculoskeletal stresses. Provides compliance advice for hazard prevention and risk-control principles and strategies.
- Liaison with site environmental team related to environmental compliance of organization’s operations.
- Resource completion of all regulatory submissions, notifications, etc. required to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local EHS requirements. Interact with EHS agency for inspections and regulatory advocacy.
- Drives EHS audit program to examine compliance with regulations and conformance with corporate standards and other related commitments. Ensure the tracking to closure of corrective and improvement actions taken in response to audit findings.
- Leads, develops or coordinates training programs to increase proficiency in EHS practices and promote awareness. Documents and maintains required training records per organizational and corporate guidelines.
- Resource organization to ensure timely reporting, classification, and investigation of EHS incident or near miss events.
- Provide and follow up on all ergonomic requests in laboratory and office settings.
- Lead specialized work streams or be called upon to participate in other EHS networks or committees within the organization.
- Keeps the line organization appraised in making timely adjustments and continuously improve performance indicators through statistical analysis, performance metrics (leading and lagging indicators), monitoring results, etc. for organization’s EHS programs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience in an Occupational Safety or affiliated discipline or another applicable technical field (engineering, chemistry, biology) and a minimum of 10 years in EHS or research & development related positions.
- Advanced working knowledge of EHS regulations. Preferred working knowledge of EHS management practices, processes, and expectations. Experience in Research & Development (R&D)/laboratory setting is strongly preferred.
- Possess the experience and working knowledge to identify potential risks or gaps in EHS policies and procedures, identify and propose potential solutions, and recommend an action plan.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently (self-manage, plan and organize work, establish goals and objectives) with minimal day-to-day supervision, effectively manage multiple and changing priorities and to participate with teams/work groups to assess hazards, provide solutions and identify opportunities for improvements in meeting regulatory, corporate and organizational compliance. Ability to draw from experience and knowledge of technical learnings and from peer resources to arrive at professional decisions to recommend to site personnel.
- Demonstrated skills to work effectively, professionally and respectfully in a team-based environment and to promote respectful interaction with others in all aspects of people interactions. Ability to build professional relationships, and to involve, and network with peers, customers, line management and technical competency experts. Strong interpersonal skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to influence others in support of organizational goals and objectives. Ability to get agreement in an environment of common and conflicting needs. Finds alternative pathways to act when barriers are encountered.
- Demonstrated effective oral presentation, report writing, and other written communication skills.
- Demonstrated skill in operation of office and database computer software (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint).
- Strong project management, organization, and prioritization skills.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and renew technical and regulatory expertise (active learner).
