The R&D Hardware Integration Team is searching for the best talent for their Mechanical Engineer’s position, based in
Santa Clara, CA.
This Mechanical Engineer will work with other members of the Research & Development team to support the development of our robotic systems. They will work to repair, support, and refine the hardware (electrical and mechanical) of our robotic systems. This role is responsible for hardware troubleshooting, root cause analysis, debugging, repair and readiness for operation of our prototype equipment. This includes the creation and updating of design documentation, CAD designs, drawings, and related documents. They will be focused on refining and formalizing innovative designs based on user needs, product requirements and issues found during prototyping & test. Key team interfaces include electrical engineering, robot controls, system integration, and internal manufacturing groups.
As a member of the R&D Hardware Integration Team, you will contribute to the development of a complex robotic medical platform. You will be responsible for:
- Support & refine electromechanical prototypes which can be used to inform and drive design decisions.
- Provide hands-on troubleshooting, process, and manufacturing assistance in support of a rapid development cycle.
- Bring safe, robust, and reliable solutions utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes and releasing design documentation through an ECO process.
- Ability and willingness to work through all phases of product development from conceptualization to mass production.
- Must be capable of working independently and in cross departmental engineering teams.
- Be a positive, collaborative team member with a good honest work ethic.
Qualifications: Required Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other applicable technical degree.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 1+ years of design experience inclusive of intern experience.
- Experience using CAD to design and document both large and small parts and assemblies.
- Demonstrated familiarity and understanding of common manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal, casting, injection molding, and 3D printing.
- Basic knowledge of working in an ISO, FDA, or other regulated environment.
- Proven track record working well in a team environment and learning from others.
- Experience working in robotics or medical capital equipment.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Mechanical design and analysis skills preferred including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis. Ability to perform basic FEA.
- Familiarity with making drawings following standard methodologies from AMSE Y14.5-2009 Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Experience working with vendors to select, source, quote, and procure off the shelf and custom designed components.
- Working knowledge of mechanisms and various types of motors, encoders, sensors, and drivetrain-related components such as gears, lead screws, splines, cams, linear guides, belts & pulleys.
- Experience using SolidWorks.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to travel up to 10% domestic US and Internationally, with overnight stay.
- Ability to work onsite at the J&J office in Santa Clara, CA.
Work Environment:
- This position operates in a laboratory/assembly environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
Physical Demands:
- May require lifting of up to 50 lbs. and operation of hoisting equipment for heavier loads
- May require prolonged periods of standing, bending, sitting, and kneeling during system assembly.
California Bay Area - The anticipated base pay range for this position is $81,000 to $129,605.
