Job Description
R&D Modeling and Simulation Engineer
The Procter and Gamble Global Materials Development and Supply Organization is seeking a highly motivated PhD intern who can build a Finite Element model to understand interactions between materials of flexible assembled products. The products of interest are subject to cyclical multidirectional compressive and extensional forces which may change under different in-use scenarios. Goal is to explore the effects on how changing the characteristics and properties of individual parts, held together by adhesives, will impact stresses at the interfaces and enable designing of robust well-rounded products that can withstand a broad range of stress conditions.
Important Responsibilities
Work with material experts and product designers to understand the specifics of the assembly, properties of each part and joints and the compressive and encouraged external forces.
Identify appropriate virtual analysis technique and modeling approach. Identify appropriate computational methods to use within available software tools.
Investigate results from an analysis to derive key insights and deliver actionable recommendations on the assembly and opportunities to avoid stress concentration points which could lead to failure.
Work closely with modeling experts, product designers and material experts to develop, validate and deliver holistic predictive computational models.
Detail the model framework, assumptions and validation. Train and complete model transfer to an identified resource at the end of assignment.
Job Qualifications
Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Material Science Engineering, or equivalent field is preferred.
Candidate should have strong analytical skills with interest in applying modeling and virtual simulation methods to solve technical problems.
Have knowledge of computational mechanics, first principles models, mechanics of materials, numerical simulation methods such as finite element modeling (FEM).
Working skill level with Finite Element Analysis software (preferably Abaqus or similar), ideally familiar with simulation software like Ansys LS-DYNA
Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
