The Role
As QuidelOrtho continues to grow, we are seeking a motivated Electrical Engineering Team Lead for in vitro diagnostic instrument development who will provide technical leadership and contribution to product design, as well as functional management to a team of individuals with responsibilities of electrical design and fabrication for QuidelOrtho’s instrument platforms.
This position reports to the Senior Manager of R&D Mechanical & Electrical Engineering and is located onsite in Rochester, NY.
The Responsibilities
- Leads and manages team of electrical engineers and technicians that delivers new instrument hardware and sustainment of current product portfolio.
- Manages team to ensure development projects are staffed and executed in alignment with QuidelOrtho’s growth strategy.
- Drives instrument development by leading and/or contributing to the design, verification/validation, and implementation of subsystem control boards, power systems, sensitometry DSP boards, system harnessing, and other electrical instrumentation.
- Supports current product instrumentation by conducting root cause analysis and delivering reliability improvements, field enhancements, and obsolescence solutions for electrical designs.
- Provides technical oversight of design work undertaken by the team through standardized design reviews.
- Works with manager to ensure Electrical Engineering R&D capabilities, including people, processes, tools, and methods, are supportive of overall Electrical Engineering functional strategy.
- Enables an engaged working environment by motivating, mentoring for personal growth, and entrepreneurship. This may include managing strategic relationships for workforce augmentation, and external design services.
- Collaborates with key stakeholders and external design partners to deliver product features that improve our customer experience, product performance and safety.
- Responsible for operating within a budget and may provide input on budget allocation and prioritization.
The Individual
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline is required, Master’s preferred.
- Minimum 8+ years relevant experience required with a track record of delivering products in the medical, automotive, and/or defense industries, preferably with relevant medical device design exposure.
- Must have 3+ years in directing and/or managing engineering teams.
- Must have technical background with hands-on experience in following areas: Electrical Engineering, leading EE teams, Root Cause Investigation, Requirements Management, Product Integration, Risk Management, Verification and Validation strategies.
- Must have direct technical experience with implementation of digital and analog circuits, design for and testing of EMI/EMC requirements, stepper motor driver circuits and servo controllers, optical systems preferred
- Must be strong advocate for and have demonstrated experience in driving productivity through adoption of state-of-the art design tools, Altium experience preferred
- Proven record of building and driving high performance teams with a strong focus on employees’ professional growth is required.

- Must have the ability to travel 10% both domestic and international.

The Working Environment
The work environment characteristics are representative of a manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environment and include handling of viral and bacterial hazards, potentially hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious or potentially infectious bodily fluids, tissues, and samples. Up to 75% of the time at desk, standing or sitting extended periods of time. Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines.
Physical Demands
Typically, 40% of time in meetings; 60% of time at the preforming technical tasks, on computer/doing paperwork/ on phone, doing analytical work. Walking, standing, and sitting for long periods of time are routine to accomplish tasks in this role.
Salary Transparency
The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary range for this position is $120,000-140,000 and is bonus eligible.
