Description Overview
The Production Engineering III role will provide technical expertise and solutions to support quality and operations at our Perrigo New York manufacturing and packaging site. This position explores innovative and alternate solutions to meet business needs while providing great customer service. This role works closely with the entire Engineering team, Validation, Quality, and Operations teams while interacting daily with other functional areas and multi-functional teams such as plant managers, supervisors, maintenance, safety, and scheduling to implement changes and to investigate/resolve problems impacting plant safety, quality, and efficiency. This position has large opportunities for growth both in the role and within the company.
Scope of the Role
Day to Day Operations
- Reviews the previous 24 hours of production data on designated work centers. Addresses any urgent business needs in a timely manner.
- Examples include general troubleshooting, contacting vendors, and Gemba support.
- Proposes solutions and means to address root causes of downtime sources.
- Tracks line efficiency (Pareto charts, DT, and work center-based data tracking software)
- Monitors and follows up on changes to ensure impact and ROI are achieved.
Lean Six Sigma (Zero Loss Mentality + Perrigo Work System Focus)
- Coordinates and leads continuous improvement projects aimed at waste reduction and efficiency improvements by streamlining processes and improving capability.
- Aligns with cross functional business partners on prioritizing projects
- Works independently and in a team setting to develop and implement solutions
- DMAIC problem solving approach
Subject Matter Expert (SME)
- Acts as technical expert with a broad knowledge and deep expertise of the latest packaging equipment and associated technology.
- Provides training to operations and various support groups as an SME
- Demonstrated understanding of core engineering principles.
- Ability to solve complex technical problems in novel ways by applying concepts, theories, and techniques.
- Support operations to meet applicable laws such as: Compliance, OSHA, Environmental, Safety, cGMP as well as Corporate and Site Quality requirements.
Capital Projects (Cradle to grave asset support)
- Organizes and generates all relevant data to prepare project scopes, cost estimates, and economic justifications for capital appropriation requests, as required, to obtain management approval.
- Provides engineering support in developing and implementing equipment installations and process improvement to support packaging operations and project engineering teams.
- Including support for URS, FAT, IQOQ, PQ and successful vertical start up
- Able to independently act a project manager providing direction to allied support groups while interfacing with multiple departments, consultants, and contractors.
Quality Investigations and Deviations
- Investigates the root causes of quality incidents
- Provides recommendations and dispositions regarding product and/or equipment under quality investigation
- Imagines, coordinates, and implements CAPAs that effectively address quality concerns/incidents
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Responsible for up to 5 business critical high-capacity work centers or site areas
- Collaborates with global resources on up to 3 auxiliary functions that support local operations and/or quality (Packaging Engineering local changes, automated equipment support, Aggregation systems, etc.)
- Expected to initiate, execute and oversee the success of various large scale process changes and/or initiatives that directly align with both team and site goals
- Implement savings projects with up to $2,000,000 in costs and $1,000,000 in savings
- Responsible for determining and executing objectives that contribute to the development of a comprehensive equipment/project design
- Acts as an SME resource for colleagues of all levels/departments within the organization
- Capable of mentoring up to 2 junior Engineers within the team
Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Engineering Management preferred.
- 7+ years of direct Engineering experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Established understanding of engineering theoretical fundamentals of equipment operation and demonstrate the use of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
- Ability to read and understand drawings, flowcharts, schematics, as it relates to system design documentation.
- Demonstrated understanding of Lean and Six Sigma processes, including experience with different continuous improvement techniques.
- Ability to make sound economic analyses with prudent financial judgment.
- Ability to work toward broad goals and to exercise initiative in identifying projects.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated experience with quality systems in an FDA current GMP regulated environment strongly preferred.
- Hands-on knowledge of production operations and associated control systems preferred.
