Ethicon is recruiting for an Experienced R&D Engineer in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
The Experienced Engineer, a member of the Lifecycle Management Needle team within Ethicon Wound Closure and Healing R&D, will participate in resolution of challenging problems impacting the Division and the Corporation. The Engineer will seek out and incorporate new ideas into concepts that lead to solutions for new and improvements to existing products and processes.

Expectations
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams in the design, development, testing, and manufacturing of surgical sutures (focus on needle), surgical devices, related products, and other novel medical devices, and be able to function as a team member.
- Play a hands-on role in conducting lab-based development activities, analyze and interpret performance and analytical data to guide product and process optimization, document research activities in accordance with design control requirements, and conduct all required research activities associated with development of new materials, components, raw materials, and processes for wound closure devices.
- Effectively apply their scientific skill and technical leadership to conduct research toward design of new products, as well as supporting and improving (lifecycle management of) existing product offerings.
- Provide technical expertise, in terms of problem solving for technical and executional problems using advanced knowledge and experience. Contribute inventions, new designs, new processes and techniques to solve technical problems based on customer needs.
- Improve design and process to achieve business goals.
- Ensure project timelines and all required project needs are met.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads efforts to create innovative solutions and processes.
- Performs complex hands-on (experimental) and simulated testing for surgical needle making, processing, prototyping, design development and verification, and/or test method development.
- Creates, reviews and edits all engineering documentation related to assigned projects, such as technical reports, work instructions and method and process validation.
- Leads basic engineering operations, and complex scientific evaluation on new products, processes, technology concepts, and product development. Implements complex design concepts and ideas into working prototypes, specifications and design outputs.
- Collaborates closely with associates in R&D and partners with other functions (eg. Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc) on project strategy and execution
- Provides communications to management; communicates technical and nontechnical information effectively to all.
- Coordinates and manage resources and work efforts necessary to achieving group and business goals and objectives while mitigating risks.
- Develops and review project plans in support of new product development and life-cycle management of existing products.
- Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures
Education:
- A Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Materials Engineering or related field is required. An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) is strongly preferred but could be substituted by experience in the field of metallurgy or materials.
Experience and Skills:
Required
- Knowledge of metallurgy or materials science and engineering to high volume manufacturing process for high strength metal devices. Processes will include wire drawing, heat treatment, stamping, forming, silicone coating, drilling (laser), electropolishing
- B.S. degree with a minimum of two to four (2 to 4) years of industrial experience
Preferred
- Knowledge of product development cycles and design control regulations (ISO 9000 and QSR) for the medical device industry is strongly recommended.
- Design/Process Excellence knowledge is desirable.
- Must have excellent proven problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Must have good interpersonal skills to effectively utilize influence management techniques
- Must be able to apply and comprehend a broad range of engineering and scientific principles
- M.S. degree OR a Ph.D. degree with some industrial experience.
- Knowledge of metallurgy, with demonstrated understanding of material characterization, structure-property-processing relationships is preferred. Specific experience in stainless steel processing and silicone coating is highly desirable.
- Adept, hands-on experimentalist with experience in material science and metallurgy is highly desirable with specific focus on mechanical and performance testing
- Experience in applying scientific principles, analytical techniques and judgment to independently resolve technical issues and establish new methods, controls & procedures is required.
- Broad knowledge of medical device product development and working knowledge of materials and their application in medical devices, including familiarity with regulations and requirements for the development of implantable medical devices is preferred.
