Position Summary
The Datacenter Engineering Principal Electrical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs.
The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Candidate will manage, review, and coordinate the delivery of complex datacenter electrical systems, power distribution systems and backup power systems. This individual will be responsible for managing external consultants, making sure they engineer and design to Microsoft standards. Candidate will also be responsible for the technical review and analysis of the lease and colocation datacenters from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.
The ideal candidate will have experience in a team environment, experience running and designing enterprise scale services and platforms, technical depth in cloud platforms, agile development practices, and experience in designing & tuning telemetry. In addition, this position requires an individual who can demonstrate the ability to ensure highly resilient and scalable service designs through partnership with other members of the service team.
Job Description
DCE employs specialist contract staff to support the delivery of datacenters across EMEA. Augmented staff include Design Mangers, Civil and Structural Engineers, Architects, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, EPMS and BAS and Telecoms Engineers. DCE now requires a skilled and experienced Fire Engineer Consultant to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the design, implementing fire safety strategies, and providing expert advice to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and standards across EMEA. The successful candidate will support projects across EMEA and in various jurisdictions. The role is within our CSA group, and you will work alongside MSFT Architects and Design Mangers and review and comment on external consultant designs. The SME will ensure IFC packs are fit for purpose, accurate, sufficiently detailed and co- ordinated to allow GCs to tender and construct without delay and prevent GC claims.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead and direct consultants in the design and coordination of the electrical systems with other disciplines, associated power and overall electrical topology for our datacenter builds.
- Responsible for leading electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms along with key stakeholders within Microsoft.
- Manage all power system designs during the design stages, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and installation on site. Identify and resolve issues raised by the construction teams and various stakeholders.
- Interface closely with procurement team, the manufacturers, and the global and local engineering teams to deliver the electrical solutions needed for each project.
- Responsible for specification and design development, detailing the sequence of operation for the electrical systems and overall drawings and specifications for our electrical topology.
- Technical review and analysis of the lease and colocation datacenter space from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.
- Lead technical review with utility provider to complete reliability study and support Energy team with feasibility studies.
- Support the Energy team is energy application by providing requirement in power demand, power resiliency and physical diversity.
- Support the Site Selection team by validating electrical infrastructure arrangement, substation footprint and identify power availability risk during site due diligence and test fit.
- Assist partner teams to review the electrical infrastructure upgrading scope to raise site utilization.
- Assist in commissioning validating performance, quality, and reliability.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
The ideal candidate will be an electrical Professional Engineer with expertise in datacenter electrical power engineering. A team player able to work in a multi-disciplined engineering team designing Microsoft Datacenters globally and possesses the skills to work in a fast-paced multi project environment. Ideal candidate is knowledgeable in power generation and transmission topologies. Having a firm understanding of the electrical distribution system design and monitoring requirements for mission critical applications, along sequence of operation requirements and monitoring all datacenter electrical control systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
- Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
- A minimum of 15 years’ experience in consulting engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as lead engineer.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex electrical engineering systems (Datacenters, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries).
- The ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.
- Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning of electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits.
- Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages.
- Knowledge of mechanical and control systems related to datacenter environments.
- Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.
- Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches.
- Detailed understanding of relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching.
- Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations.
- Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project, Visio, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information
- Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards.
Preferred, not required:
- Experience operating CAD, Sketchup and/or BIM software for drawing review and adjustments is desirable
