Are you a highly motivated, innovative, and data-driven Medicinal Chemist with broad drug discovery experience? Alexion Pharmaceuticals is looking for you! We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist III position in Medicinal Chemistry at our vibrant New Haven research campus. You will join the small molecule research team and collaborate in the discovery of high-quality drug candidates. This role requires strong technical and problem-solving skills in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry, excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
As a Scientist III, you will provide hands-on leadership in the design, synthesis, and characterization of molecules as part of drug discovery efforts. You will analyze screening data, perform literature reviews, design, propose, and implement medicinal chemistry plans. You will coordinate chemistry and biology data to support compound progression and patent strategies. You will contribute at all stages of a project, from inception, early project validation, optimization, candidate selection, and through to early development. You will work closely with other experts to identify key drug discovery issues, propose and implement creative solutions, execute on innovative medicinal chemistry designs, and guide teams to success and decision points. You will also contribute to the development of intellectual property and patent strategies.
Essential Skills/Experience:
- Ph.D. in synthetic organic or medicinal chemistry with 5-8 years of drug discovery experience in a pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology setting (may include post-doc experience)
- Contemporary knowledge of the key Medicinal Chemistry concepts and good understanding of biology, pharmacology, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics
- A track-record of contributions to innovative drug discovery projects, exemplified by a record of patent inventorship, conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications
- Demonstrated identification and application of SAR toward successful hit-to-lead and lead compound optimization, and a proven track record of delivering clinical candidates
- Strong laboratory presence (60-70%) and experience mentoring scientists
- Outstanding communication skills
- Experience in structure-based drug design and computational chemistry
- Experience in hit identification techniques and progressing compounds from hit identification to clinical candidates
- Extensive track record of consistent and successful drug discovery accomplishments
- Supervise and direct synthetic chemistry activities at contract research organizations (CROs)
- Solid understanding of cellular/molecular biology, biochemistry, disease pharmacology, mechanisms of drug metabolism and molecular toxicology, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic sciences, and formulations for the in vivo evaluation of drug candidates
