We foster an inclusive culture and are looking for diverse, talented people to join Alcon and we are looking for a Principal Scientist - Antimicrobial Material Development - Ocular Health (Formulation Development) in Fort Worth, TX.
The Principal Scientist will lead the development of innovative solutions in contact lens care and other related areas and lead research and development efforts to create and enhance new biomaterials and formulations, focusing on preservative and antimicrobial material and formulation development. This role involves designing and optimizing formulations with a strong emphasis on material interactions, contact lens material, surface chemistry, preservatives and antimicrobial agents. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in ophthalmic formulation, a strong grasp of regulatory requirements, and a track record of successful product development. This role supports the advancement of both intraocular and extraocular materials.
In this role, a typical day will include:
Lead the design and development of new contact lens care solutions, including cleaning, disinfecting, and conditioning products.
Develop and optimize formulations that balance efficacy, safety, and compatibility with various contact lens materials.
Conduct in-depth research on new and emerging preservatives and antimicrobial agents, evaluating their efficacy and safety for ophthalmic use.
Oversee the selection and application of materials and ingredients.
Comply with FDA and international regulations for ophthalmic products.
Prepare and review documentation for regulatory submissions and product approvals.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior scientists and team members.
Drive innovation in formulation science, incorporating new technologies and methodologies to enhance product performance.
Experience
Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry, biochemistry, biomaterials, polymer sciences, or a related field.
Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in formulation development, with a focus on ophthalmic products or contact lens care solutions.
Extensive knowledge of preservatives and antimicrobial agents used in ophthalmic formulations.
Expertise in materials science, particularly in relation to contact lens materials and their interactions with care solutions.
Experience with advanced contact lens technologies or emerging materials is desired
Strong understanding of FDA and international regulations for ophthalmic products.
Experiences in managing complex projects and leading cross-functional teams is desired
What You'll Bring to Alcon:
Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
