At GSK we see a world in which advanced applications of Machine Learning and AI will allow us to develop novel therapies to existing diseases and to quickly respond to emerging or changing diseases with personalized drugs, driving better outcomes at reduced cost with fewer side effects. It is an ambitious vision that will require the development of products and solutions at the cutting edge of Machine Learning and AI. If that excites you, we'd love to chat.
We're looking for a Software Engineer to help us make this vision a reality. Our team focuses on the discovery of preclinical digital biomarkers that translate robustly to clinical outcomes, primarily through computer vision applications. An important outcome of our work is that, while enabling deeper insights into the effects and mechanisms of action of treatments, importantly, it also helps to advance the 3Rs framework, a set of principles that guide the ethical and humane use of animals in scientific research.
Competitive candidates will have a track record of designing, building and shipping high-quality, well-documented and well-tested software – preferably in the AI/ML industry. They should be comfortable with modern, cloud-native computing such as the Docker/Kubernetes/Helm ecosystem, distributed systems, or high-performance computing environments. Candidates should have a strong sense of the abstractions needed to represent ML products and workflows and have demonstrated experience in database design, operations, and microservice development. Strong candidates will have graduate studies in Computer Science, or equivalent demonstrated work experience. An educational or professional background in the biological sciences is a plus, but it is not required.
In this role you will:
- Work with a small team to convert vaguely described biological/drug discovery challenges into well-defined machine learning problem, particularly in the computer vision domain (both images and video).
- Work side-by-side with AI/ML engineers and researchers to determine optimal ways of translating AI/ML concepts into efficient and robust code
- Execute and deliver full AI/ML driven solution from sourcing training data, design and implementing SOTA machine learning models, testing, benchmarking, and product driven research for model performance improvement, to shipping stable, tested, performant code and services in an agile environment.
- Create, refactor, and maintain an efficient, well-structured codebase
- Engage with a diverse group of research scientists to help solve complex problems in the preclinical domain.
Why you?
Qualifications & Skills:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, preferably focused on software engineering, high-performance computing, or machine learning. Candidates not meeting these academic requirements will be considered if demonstrating many years of industry experience in software/machine learning engineering.
- Experienced / Accomplished in software engineering with advanced skills and expertise in best practices for Pythonic programming, for example refactoring code for efficiency in PyTorch.
- Several years of industry experience in software design or architecture.
- Experience developing services and infrastructure on GCP or similar cloud software.
- Proficiency with standard deep learning algorithms and model architectures
- Experience in deep learning for computer vision, including but not limited to image segmentation and object detection
- Advanced level in PyTorch or Tensorflow.
- Experience with devop stacks: version control, CI/CD, containerization, etc.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
- Track record of contributing to open-source projects
- Mentality of commit early and often, metrics before models, and shipping high quality production code
- Experience with video analysis and tracking
- Knowledge in disease biology, molecular biology and biochemistry
