Smith+Nephew seeks a R&D Senior Staff Systems Engineer in the rapidly growing ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) business to lead systems engineering activities for research, innovation, and new product development. Systems Engineering at Smith+Nephew is a critical and interdisciplinary role with a mission to provide strong engineering leadership to drive the development of new enabling technologies and the technical success of new product development projects.
What will you be doing?
Drive engineering activities and technical aspects of research and new product development programs in partnership with technical leads and program managers
- Clearly articulate program mission and stakeholder needs
- Own requirements development, including user needs, system, and accessory requirements
- Guide interdisciplinary activities for the mechanical, electrical, software, and/or system development activities together with the functional leads to achieve program objectives
- Define system architecture including functional, physical, and interface specifications
- Support integration activities including identification of integration goals and success criteria
- Develop verification and validation strategies in collaboration with the test teams
- Support pre-clinical and clinical evaluations
- Analyze product and project risk throughout development
- Remain current with the systems engineering discipline and champion good systems engineering practice and improvement initiatives
- Lead and guide new technology research to expand into new indications in support of the innovation pipeline
What will you need to be successful?
- Education: Minimum BS Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Biomedical Engineering, or related technical degree. Preferred MS in Systems Engineering or other Systems Engineering training/experience.
- Experience:
- Minimum 8+ years of experience with a BS degree or 5+ years with a MS degree working in R&D on complex products.
- Consistent track record of delivering innovative medical device products to the market is required.
- Experience developing sophisticated products that include hardware and software, particularly systems with embedded firmware.
- Demonstrated teambuilding skills with ability to create strong collaborative relationships across multiple technical disciplines.
- Breadth of knowledge across mechanical, electrical, and software engineering fields.
- A working understanding of medical device design control and standards including IEC 60601, 62304, ISO 14971, FDA and MDD/MDR guidance documents.
- Expertise in partitioning and decomposing complex engineering problems into solvable problems
- Skilled in writing requirements, developing system architecture, driving product trade-off decisions, and supporting verification and validation strategy development
- Prefer experience using Cognition Cockpit or similar tools for requirements management
- Prefer experience using Enterprise Architect or similar tools for model-based systems engineering related activities
- Persistent, driven, self-motivated, and able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and written/verbal communication skills
- Leadership: Experience leading new product development activities in medical device or another regulated industry.
- Travel Requirements: Up to 15% depending on project needs
