About the role:
The Pre-Clinical Sciences Supervisor is responsible for coordinating all aspects of Research and Technology Center animal housing facilities to ensure compliance with all appropriate regulations. The position will work closely with the attending Veterinarian and Senior Management. This position will also be responsible for supervising and directing all the activities of a minimum of 8 animal care associates to ensure proper and consistent husbandry care for all species. Ensure direct reports have the resources, training, and support needed to perform job tasks.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Ensure animal housing facility compliance with all applicable organizations and regulations (FDA, USDA, AAALAC, IACUC, etc.), as well as the Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations.
- Supervises, trains, and participates in cleaning, disinfecting, and feeding of all laboratory animals.
- Oversee various husbandry related projects.
- Coordinate ongoing maintenance of the animal facility and any animal facility upgrades, as needed.
- Responsible for supervising Animal Care Assistants.
- Develops direct reports by securing appropriate training, assigning progressively challenging tasks, applying progressive disciplinary action as appropriate and conducting formal written and verbal performance reviews.
- Maintains personnel records (e.g., work schedules, vacation schedules, leaves) and makes or directs modifications in the database to reflect actual changes.
- May lead a group or team of employees in the achievement of organizational goals. Guide, coach, direct, and develop direct reports, and if applicable, drive those practices throughout their organization.
- Foster a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.
- May direct and control the activities and budget of one or more functional areas, divisions, product groups, projects/programs and/or operations.
- Collaborate with Facility Maintenance team when equipment and minor repairs are needed.
- Shares on-call responsibilities
- Develops work schedules for department by assessing priorities, workload, and available resources.
- Partner with the Attending Veterinarian to develop and implement animal enrichment programs.
- Implements a staffing plan by identifying resource requirements, writing justifications for additional personnel, obtaining approval for changes, and coordinating the selection process with Human Resources.
- Performs special projects on an as needed basis.
- Identify and improve processes opportunities.
Required qualifications:
- Minimum of an Associate’s degree or minimally 5 years’ experience in preclinical research setting.
- Minimum of 3 years of animal husbandry experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of people management experience.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with large animal husbandry and facility maintenance.
- Experience using Microsoft Office.
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant area or Certificate Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or Institute of Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM).
- ALAT, LAT, or LATG certificates.
- Working knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry practices and Welfare compliance.
- Understanding cage washing and vivarium sanitation operations.
- Interest in mentoring, teaching, and cross-training staff to promote professional growth of employees.
- Ability to work collaboratively with supervisor and other department managers.
- Experience with conflict management.
