POSITION SUMMARY
The Principal Electrical Design Engineer will work as a member of the Global BioDevices team in the design, development, and testing of electro-mechanical, thermal, and optical sub-systems, as well as the integration into new, innovative products. The Engineer will utilize best practices and advanced technical concepts to solve complex problems and create effective product offerings.
The Engineer will be guided by a comprehensive stage gate development process and be expected to resolve complex technical challenges that arise during product development. The Engineer is expected to work independently and collaborate with a global team; the global team includes Design/Product Engineers, Reliability, Scientists, Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Suppliers. The Engineer will regularly coordinate/influence the design efforts of other engineers and developers during a project, although no specific supervisory responsibilities are attached to the job.
The Engineer has primary design responsibility from project initiation through the functional prototype phase (Alpha) where the product design requirements have been successfully verified. During the subsequent design phases the Engineer will assist the product design team and design for producibility. The Engineer is in a supporting role to ensure product performance is met while scaling the product for launch, as well as supporting Product Engineers to prepare the operations team for manufacturing readiness. The Engineer will also manage supplier readiness for supplied parts, initial install/implementation oversight in customer facilities, and provide subject matter expert product support (issue resolution) after launch as needed.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Principal Electrical Design Engineer has a wide range of responsibilities, including:
- Provide key engineering leadership and guide facilitating collaboration for multiple projects, including new products from design concept to manufacturing launch, and to ensure designs can be implemented into a producible/viable product.
- Provide technical leadership in finalizing design requirements to create designs that meet technical and business requirements.
- Provide formal/informal mentoring/coaching within own work group and team.
- Resolving design issues discovered in functional prototype testing and finalizing design for manufacturability (internal and supply base) without compromising product performance.
- Resolving technical issues arising from Prototype & First Article submittals and Verification & Validation testing.
- Finalizing and optimizing design of components, including system level solutions, equipment power distribution (120/240VAC), and electronic circuit designs.
- Working with Product Engineering to consider high volume assembly process in design concepts (Design for Manufacturability).
- Finalizing and optimizing design and development of all electro-mechanical, controls, and circuits required by product requirements, while understanding the interface to electrical control systems and underlying biological process needs.
- Participating in developing product specifications, DFMEA, PFMEA, validation test plans, hazard analysis and risk assessments for reporting of product development status/metrics and updating at subsequent phases.
- Developing and implementing electrical and system concept design, performing sensitivity analyses, timing analyses, circuit analysis or other design analyses.
- Ensuring designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory safety/compliance requirements, and international standards.
- Communicating complex technical situations in an understandable way.
- Preparing/overseeing assigned stage gate technical documentation from Proof of Concept through functional product prototypes.
- Resolving issues using problem solving techniques/best practices, including design updates, supplier technical issue resolution, process development/improvement and related documentation.
